Launch of Rediscovering Indigenous Languages website
24/11/2014
Exciting day… we have just launched a new website that will provide unprecedented access to vital records of 100 Indigenous Australian languages – many considered to be critically endangered!
Visit the Rediscovering Indigenous Languages website here: indigenous.sl.nsw.gov.au
We embarked on a landmark project three years ago, with the support of Rio Tinto Australia, to revitalise, rescue and preserve Indigenous languages from the State Library’s archival records.
Internationally renowned linguist Dr Michael Walsh discovered valuable details on 100 Indigenous languages among the Library’s 14kms of manuscripts.
Our Indigenous team is working closely with communities to consult on the most appropriate ways to provide access to these records.
