Making Connections -- Milingimbi

06/11/2014

The Indigenous Unit recently hosted a visit by Dr Louise Hamby (ANU), Lindy Allen (Museum Victoria) and Joseph Neparrnga Gumbula (Yolngu, Milingimbi) who are collaborating on a project to identify archival material relating to Milingimbi and Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory. The mission at Milingimbi celebrates its 100 year anniversary in 2016.
The settlement at Milingimbi was established by the Methodist Church whose records and photographs (1885-1938) are kept in the Mitchell Library. The photographs are especially important to the history of the Yolngu people of the Arnhem region. Dr Gumbula and his home community is assisting us in identifying the names of people and places depicted in the photos. They are being digitised for their (virtual) return to Milingimbi.
