Out of the Vaults

07/07/2015

To celebrate NAIDOC Week, The Indigenous Services Branch of the State Library of NSW is hosting an Out of the Vaults talk

at 6pm tomorrow night @ the State Library. For this talk, our Senior Indigenous Librarians, Ronald Briggs & Melissa Jackson are selecting interesting Indigenous items held within the collection of the State Library for them to discuss and share stories about. Two of these items selected are the figures pictured below

These figures were set up on the stair posts at the Alexander Berry’s Crows Nest House on the North Shore of Sydney.  This figures were sold
when the rest of the household goods were disposed of in the 1930’s.

The house was demolished in 1932 to make way for the building of North Sydney Demonstration School.

Through some research conducted by Ronald & Melissa, it
appears that these figures were influenced or imitated from the Kerry & co photographs that are also held within the State Library Collection .

A closer inspection revealed that these figures have “ALLOM ‘97” inscribed on them. Could this be the sculptors name and the year that they were created?

For more discussion about some of the most intriguing Indigenous material held within the State Library collection, come to the Out Of the Vaults talk on Wednesday the 8th July 2015 @ the State Library, 6-7:30 pm. Bookings are essential.
