  Survival Day, 26th January

For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples 26 January is known as Survival Day. This day recognises the continued endurance of Indigenous peoples, their cultures and
language.

Warra
Warra Wai
” is thought to be the first words spoken by the Aboriginal people of
the Eora nation to the Europeans who landed at Sydney Cove on 26th January 1788. Warra Warra
Wai means “go away”.

Over
200 years later Indigenous languages are still surviving and are being actively
revitalised. On Survival Day learn more about Indigenous languages through our Rediscovering
Indigenous Languages

website.
